Breathe

Breathe

Breathe was a solo exhibition by Hong Kong–based artist Angelina Li, presented from April 26 to May 6, 2023, featuring ceramic sculptures and paintings inspired by the silent poetry of marine life. Held in an intimate setting, the show invited viewers to slow down, reflect, and immerse themselves in the rhythms of water, form, and memory.

About the Exhibition

For over fifteen years, Angelina Li has been diving across Bali, Palau, Japan, and the Maldives, quietly observing the ocean’s hidden architecture. Her fascination with sea sponges — their stillness, their soft and porous texture, their subtle undulations on the sea floor — became the seed of this exhibition. Breathe translated those observations into ceramic sculptures and paintings that seemed to pulse with life, softness, and presence.

The exhibition explored the contradiction of solidity and fluidity. Clay, a material often seen as heavy and inert, was shaped into forms that appeared light and organic, echoing the motion of tides and the slow respiration of the deep sea.

About the artist

Angelina Li is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in ceramics and painting. A regular diver, she draws direct inspiration from the ocean’s textures and structures — from the violence of waves to the serenity of the abyss. Her works are deeply personal, infused with the dualities of movement and stillness, femininity and strength, and transformation and permanence.

Her ceramic pieces seem to float between states — water and earth, form and void — inviting contemplation and sensory connection.

Angelina’s ceramics and paintings seem to be in continuous movement, with subtle energy, strength, and frequency… they express a sense of freedom and transcendence in varied art forms.
